What are Possession verbs?

A class of verbs known as possession verbs denotes the relationship between two nouns in which one is owned or possessed by the other. These verbs imply relationship, ownership, and belonging. For example, "The book belongs to Fatima," or "Sabrina owns a car."

Grammatical Rules:

1. Using Possessive Forms:

When a noun is already in its possessive form (adding 's or using an apostrophe), the possession verb is often omitted. For example, "Sarah's car" instead of "Sarah possesses a car." Another example would be "Jake's notebook" instead of "Jake possess a notebook."

2. With Personal Pronouns:

Possession verbs are not typically used with personal pronouns (I, you, he, she, it, we, they) to indicate possession. Instead, the possessive forms are used directly: "My book" or "Your car." Saying "I's book" or "You's car" would be incorrect.

3. With Possessive Nouns:

When using a possessive noun (e.g., John's, Sarah's) as the subject, the possession verb is not required: "John's car is red" instead of "John possesses a red car."

4. The -ing Rule:

We do not add -ing to possession verbs when using Present/Past Continuous tense. For example:

Has/Have ✔ Hasing/Having ✖

 Possess  Possessing

‣ Belong  Belonging

‣ Own  ✔ Owning

‣ Contain   Containing

‣ Consist   Consisting

1. Belong

2. Have

3. Own

4. Possess

5. Hold

6. Keep

7. Retain

8. Control

I possess a great sense of  humor. (I actually do)

2. Own:

My mother owns her own restaurant in London.

3. Contain:

The book contains alot of X-rated content.
