What is Procrastination?

It's likely that we will have to complete chores around the house, have tough conversations with friends, or tackle an upcoming job project.

In simple words, Procrastination is the practice of postponing or delaying duties like these until the very last minute or even after they are past due.


Types of Procrastinators:

1. Seeking excitement: 

Some people find that starting a project soon before the deadline or leaving the house at the last minute offers them a satisfying rush of adrenaline.

The person who creates emergencies purposely delays tasks until the very last moment. They feel they perform best under pressure and find deadlines (situations) thrilling, which leads to bad time management.

TIP:

The idea that you will do better if you rush the task is incorrect because it prevents you from examining it later and improving it. If you tend to put off tasks until the last minute, consider implementing the Pomodoro technique.


2. Attempting to avoid:

The thought that you're not excellent at something, so you're just going to leave it as it is, is the basis for this kind of procrastination. When someone gets involved in this kind of procrastination, their excessive fear of making a mistake or being judged prevents them from completing the activity.

TIP:

Aim to divide your tasks into more manageable subtasks. Make reasonable calculations based on your understanding of the time and energy required for a particular task.


3. Perfectionist: 

Procrastination can take the form of perfectionism. When someone engages in this kind of procrastination, they work on a task until the very last minute in an effort to make it flawless.

TIP:

To end procrastination, follow clear task purposes and time limits to each one and ensure focus and completion within the timeframe, or else, your time will be wasted.


4. Worriers:

Worriers fear risk because they have an overwhelming need for security. Because they are afraid of change, they put off completing tasks to avoid having to venture outside of their comfort zone.

The worrier is so paranoid that they constantly ask themselves "what if." They use caution. As a result, they are reluctant to accept responsibility and take necessary action.

TIP:

Don't be afraid of change, fear being in the same state as you would be the next day and visualize the end result. 


Punctuality Vs Procrastination 

What is Punctuality?

In case you don't know, Punctuality is the practice of being on time and showing responsibility.


Punctuality Vs Procrastination:

Two diametrically opposed behaviors that can have a big impact on someone's productivity and performance are procrastination and punctuality.

Being on time or showing up at a specific location or event at the appointed time is referred to as being punctual. It is dependable, disciplined, and respectful of other people's time. Being late can result in lost business, strained relationships, and missed opportunities, which is why punctuality is crucial in professional settings.

Contrarily, procrastination is the practice of putting off or postponing things until the very last minute.

 Missed deadlines, poor outcomes, and increased stress can arise from it. Procrastination is frequently brought on by overload, fear of failing, or a lack of enthusiasm. It may result in a self-defeating cycle of guilt and procrastination that lowers productivity and self-worth even further.

To sum up, being on time fosters success and respect, whereas being late creates negative habits that impede productivity and achievement. By practicing punctuality and refraining from putting things off, people can become better time managers, experience less stress, and accomplish their objectives more quickly.


Procrastination Vs ADHD:

While procrastination and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) have many things in common, they also differ in important ways.

1. Causes:

Whether or not a person has ADHD, procrastination is a behavioral tendency that can impact everyone. It is often driven by things like perfectionism, fear, or a lack of drive. The neurological condition known as ADHD, on the other hand, affects a person's capacity for concentration, time management, and task completion.

2. Symptoms: 

While procrastination and ADHD can both lead to missed deadlines and incomplete assignments, there are differences between the underlying causes of these behaviors.
When it comes to executive functioning skills like planning, scheduling, and time management, people with ADHD may struggle, whereas procrastinators may put off work out of a lack of motivation or fear of failing.

3. Treatment:

 Developing ways to break the habit of procrastinating and addressing underlying psychological problems are common approaches to treating procrastination.

 ADHD patients may be treated with medication to control symptoms like hyperactivity and impulsivity in addition to therapy to help them learn coping mechanisms and executive functioning techniques.

4. Effect on daily life: 

While procrastination can result in negative emotions such as worry, guilt, and low self-esteem, it usually has little effect on a person's general well-being or ability to function on a daily basis. Yet, because it can interfere with a person's capacity to manage obligations, uphold relationships, and accomplish personal objectives, ADHD may have an even greater impact on daily life.


How Procrastination Affects Academic life:

Procrastination in the classroom can have a big impact on a student's growth. 

In academic environments, punctuality is crucial because it demonstrates respect for instructors, students, and the educational process. 

Being on time for lectures, classes, and tests exhibits responsibility and discipline, two traits that are essential for academic achievement. Students are also better able to maintain their attention and involvement in the learning process since they are not sidetracked by interruptions or tardies.

Procrastination, on the other hand, can negatively impact academic achievement. Here are some ways through which procrastination affects a student's life: 

1. Poor Time management skills:

Procrastinating students frequently find it difficult to finish tasks on time, which lowers their marks and prevents them from taking advantage of opportunities to learn. 

2. Poor Academic performance:

Academic achievement may be further hampered by procrastination since it can also result in elevated stress levels and inadequate time management abilities.

3. Decreased learning outcomes: 

Students may not remember the material as effectively as they would have if they had studied continuously over time if they put off finishing their schoolwork or preparing for tests. Exam results may suffer as a result, and knowledge of the material may be weakened.

4. Elevated stress:

 Students who put off finishing their homework till the last minute frequently feel extremely stressed and anxious. Health problems, both mental and physical, including depression, insomnia, and headaches, may result from this.

In conclusion, procrastination can negatively affect learning outcomes, stress levels, confidence and self-esteem, academic achievement, and time management abilities. Students can enhance their academic achievements and position themselves for employment success by refraining from procrastinating and developing promptness and discipline.

8 Strategies To Help You Avoid Procrastination:

1. Take Cold showers:
 A sudden cold shower or even just splashing cold water on your face can shock your body into a more alert state, reducing feelings of laziness.

2. Change Your Music Playlist: 
Listen to upbeat or high-energy music that gets you moving. Music can have a powerful impact on your mood and motivation. Completing my daily tasks while listening to music is my favourite hobby! 

3. Think about the end result:
 Spend a few minutes imagining the positive outcomes of completing the task. Also imagine what would happen if you don't complete the task and how you would regret not doing it. 

4. Literally nobody is perfect:
Sometimes the fear of not doing something perfectly can lead to procrastination. Accept the fact that imperfect action is better than no action at all. 'Something' is better than 'nothing'.

5. Set Timers:
Set a timer for a short burst of focused work, but challenge yourself to beat the clock. This will help motivate you to take action asap. 

6. Create a Novel Environment:
Try working in places that are closer to nature. 

7. Mindful Observation:
 Take a moment to observe your feelings of laziness without judgment. This self-awareness can empower you to move forward.

8. Seek Discomfort:
Purposefully do something uncomfortable or challenging. Stepping out of your comfort zone can awaken your senses and drive you to action.

Try out these methods and see which one works the best for you! Sometimes Procrastination is no joke. Extreme and continuous procrastination can lead to serious wastage of time. Time management is a habit that every successful individual has, so you must learn it.
